Social Networking for Agents – Foursquare & Gowalla
March 18th, 2010 by DamonThere are two relatively new social networking apps available for agents to get in front of their friends, clients, and prospects.
Social networking has become so popular that even the National Association of Realtors Field Guide to Social Networking for Realtors to use so they can take full advantage of social networking sites and applications.
Two new companies in the market, Foursquare and Gowalla, take social networking to a whole new level.
They are both location based notification services that allow you to notify any of your contacts in your friend list where you are, at any time!
For example, if you go out to lunch to a Chili’s restaurant, you can check-in on your cell phone. Once you check in, it will notify your friends where you’re at along with the location. So, if someone else in the area they can see on their cell phone that you’re nearby and can come visit you.
I’ve experimented with both of the apps and neither is better than the other, but they are different in some of the features. Both Foursquare and Gowalla give you points for checking into new places, discovering places that aren’t already in their database, and adding new friends.
What’s even more exciting is that these apps can be integrated into other social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. If you check in to a new place you can set it to update your status on those profiles as well. So, even if you’re friends, clients, or prospects don’t use either of the sites, they can still find out where you are if they have a Twitter or Facebook app on their cell phone.
Before you get started, just beware…it is addicting!

while check-in services are interesting, I would love to hear what you think about all the other services doing things in the location space right now. Keep up the good work.
