SEO Tip – Real Estate is a Geographically Centric Business
June 9th, 2010 by DamonAs a real estate agent, who wouldn’t want their website to show up in the #1 position of Google when someone searched for “real estate”? It would generate a lot of traffic to your website…but it wouldn’t convert into customers or sales as one might think. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) takes time to see results, but can be very beneficial in the long run. Here’s a tip to get your real estate website ranked highly for geographical focused keywords.
The reason why it wouldn’t matter if your real estate company showed up #1 in the search engines for the keyword “real estate” is because it’s too general of a keyword. If someone from California was looking for a new home and typed in “real estate” they wouldn’t want to see a real estate company from Florida (unless they were moving to Florida).
So, what keywords should you be targeting to gain more qualified traffic to your website? If someone is looking for a new house in Tampa Bay Florida, why would probably search for “Tampa Bay Real Estate”. If you sell houses in Tampa Bay, you would want this user to find your website. If your real estate website showed up on the first page of Google for the keyword “Tampa Bay Real Estate”, not only would you be more likely to have this user click on your website link but it would be more likely that they would call you or fill out a contact form for more information.
This user is looking for real estate in Tampa Bay and you service Tampa Bay real estate. This is a win-win situation for the user and for your company.
So, reevaluate your real estate to see what keywords you’re targeting. If it’s just general real estate keywords, make the changes to add the geographical areas that you actually service.
Another way to target a geographical area is through Pay-Per-Click (PPC) markting. Next week, I’ll share some ideas and tips to use PPC in your online marketing.

This is great advice. Many new SEO marketers just try to focus on rank and use the broadest keywords, but you have to think like your customer and really try to target what they would be looking for.
